National schools on exam cheating list

What you need to know:

  • Kisii County records highest cases of anomalies, with 10 institutions affected.
  • Results for Chavakali High cancelled.

Chavakali High and Kisii High are among five national schools whose results were cancelled due to examination cheating.

Results of 2,975 candidates across the country were cancelled.

At Chavakali, English and mathematics results for 307 candidates were cancelled.

Students at the school in Vihiga were yesterday sent home, a day after the cancellation.

At Kisii High School, results for 145 candidates out of 323 were cancelled after they cheated in English and history papers.

The results for Nyabururu Girls were withheld to allow more time to investigate claims that the candidates could have cheated.

At Mang’u High School, the result for one candidate was withheld after it was established that he had not sat the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam.

Kisii County was the most affected in examination cheating. At least 10 secondary schools in the region had their results cancelled.

County Director of Education Richard Chepkawai said Nyabururu Girls had not received its results due to “grey areas that are being sorted out by the examinations council”.

“The school’s results have not been cancelled as has been claimed. They are simply being withheld and once the grey areas have been cleared, they will be released,” Mr Chepkawai said on Wednesday.

“There are queries the national examinations council wants addressed before the results are released or cancelled altogether. For Kisii High, only the results of some candidates were cancelled, not the entire school,” he added.

However, the official did not give the names of the other schools whose results had been cancelled.

The official said despite the problems, the county registered a great improvement compared to previous years. Last year, the county hosted a conference to explore ways of improving education standards.

ALLEGED COLLUSION

In Bomet, County Director of Education Hellen Nyangau said results for some students at Koibeyon, Kiplokyi Central, Koiwa, Chebilat and Simoti schools were cancelled due to irregularities.

She said 41 candidates at Koibeyon Mixed Day and Boarding Secondary School had their mathematics paper result cancelled. Two candidates had their English results nullified over alleged collusion in the examination.

At Koiwa Secondary School, said the county director, 27 candidates had their Chemistry results cancelled while 20 candidates of Chebilat Secondary School had their mathematics results cancelled.

She added that four candidates at Simoti Day Mixed had their Biology results cancelled.

The director said her office had launched investigations into examination cheating at the affected institutions.

In Nandi County, 28 out of 59 candidates at Lwanda Girls had their results in History and Business Studies cancelled over cheating.

In Mandera County, Kamor Secondary School principal Hassan Ali and his deputy Ahmed Abdo Ali sustained minor injuries after students of Barwaqo Boys Day School stormed the institution, blaming one of the teachers for the poor performance in last year’s examination.

The teacher was a supervisor during the exams.

The claimed the teacher had asked for bribes to help candidates use dubious means to pass the exam.

“We have 86 Ys. A supervisor at our school duped our brothers that they will pass if they cooperated,” said one of the students.

Barwaqo Boys Day School Principal Mohamed Yusuf confirmed that 84 out of the 256 candidates who sat the exam at the institution had their results cancelled due to irregularities.
