KQ, government charter flight to evacuate Kenyans from Juba

  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has established a South Sudan Crisis Management Centre (SSCMC) at its headquarters in Nairobi to coordinate the operation.

Kenya Airways in partnership with the government will operate two chartered flights to evacuate Kenyans from Juba on Thursday. (READ: Kenyans trapped in Juba plead for rescue).

“Kenya Airways wishes to inform its customers and the general public that it will be, in partnership with the Government of Kenya, operating two chartered flights from Juba in South Sudan to Nairobi on December 26, 2013,” read a statement sent to newsrooms on Wednesday.

The statement also said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has established a South Sudan Crisis Management Centre (SSCMC) at its headquarters in Nairobi to coordinate the operation.

On Monday, Kenya Airways said it had suspended all flights to and from Juba between December 24 and 31 with passengers who had booked flights within that week will be allowed to change their bookings, re-route to Entebbe or get refunds.

On December 21, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to evacuate 1,600 Kenyans stranded in South Sudan amid fighting that followed Sunday's coup bid.
