KU to close down campus in Tanzania

Kenyatta University on Thursday announced plans to close down its Tanzania campus, days after it was stopped from admitting students.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Paul Wainaina said the university was closing the Arusha campus in compliance with a Kenyan Government order.
“We received instructions on the same and KU is already working on closing the campus,” Prof Wainaina said.
QUALITY
The Tanzania Commission for Universities this week stopped KU, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat), Kampala International University College and 16 others from admitting students over failure to meet quality standards.
The two Kenyan institutions also have campuses in Rwanda.
KU used Sh370 million to set up the campus in Rwanda while the Arusha one cost Sh53 million.
Jkuat spent Sh10 million to start the Arusha centre and Sh21 million for the Kigali campus.
DUE PROCESS
Tanzania allowed the institutions to continue offering courses for remaining students.
The universities were criticised by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for establishing campuses outside the country without following due process.
