A businesswoman at the centre of the Sh791 million National Youth Service scandal was Tuesday interrogated over claims that former Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru shared in the loot.

Ms Josephine Kabura Irungu spent hours at the city’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices, taking detectives through her affidavit as fresh investigations into the scandal continued.

Ms Kabura, in her explosive sworn statement, linked Ms Waiguru to the scam in which the government lost huge sums of money through dubious pay-outs to highly connected companies and personalities.

The former Devolution CS, who had previously been cleared and a discharge letter issued by the EACC before Ms Kabura’s bombshell, was recalled and questioned afresh in the wake of the new allegations.

“Our detectives have been recording a statement from Ms Kabura. She is accompanied by her lawyer Dennis Mosota and Ms Bodan. We can’t reveal much as we do not want to jeopardise the process,” said the EACC spokesman Kairichi Marimba.

KEY TO THE CASE

EACC sleuths led by Abdi Mohammed took Ms Kabura through  every single issue raised in her affidavit and also sought more information regarding alleged inconsistencies in her affidavit.

She is understood to have stuck to her guns regarding the allegations.

To the EACC detectives, her testimony holds the key to the future of the case whose handling has since raised many eyebrows.

Sources said Ms Waiguru, who was at EACC offices on Monday, was taken through the new allegations in the affidavit which placed her at the centre of the NYS scandal.

Ms Kabura has accused her of stage-managing the arrests of some of the suspects linked to the case in what is seen as part of a wider cover-up plan.

Ms Kabura arrived at Integrity Centre, shortly after 10am, resplendent in a red top and checked skirt and dangling a black handbag.

She  confidently strode between her lawyer and another woman, as journalists scrambled to take pictures.

Ms Waiguru was questioned by EACC detectives for seven hours over issues raised in Ms Kabura’s affidavit. She has maintained her innocence and denied knowing Ms Kabura.

The former minister and her lawyers spent time poking holes in Ms Kabuga’s affidavit.

CHICKENGATE SCANDAL

As Ms Kabura was being questioned, Mr Trevy Oyombra, named as the mastermind of the 'Chickengate scandal' was also at the Integrity Centre, facing fresh questioning over the saga involving a multi-million shilling bribery case.

Mr Oyombra was the first to be questioned in the second round of the probe on bribery of electoral commission officials, initiated after the British Government sent a report on mutual legal assistance to the Attorney General’s office.

He was accompanied by his  lawyer, Mr Charles Kanjama.

The anti corruption commission’s detectives also questioned some former electoral officials who were members of the tender committee on the procurement of ballot papers for Shinyalu and Bomachoge by-elections at the time.
