MPs have passed a motion declaring the Kamukunji grounds a protected national monument.

The legislators passed the motion by Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan on Thursday.

Mr Hassan had said the historical site is one of the most important public spaces in Kenya’s political history but has been neglected and is in a derelict state.

He said national leaders held groundbreaking political rallies there that mobilised the masses in the struggle for freedom and independence from colonial rule.

He said the grounds also hosted the July 7, 1990 Saba Saba rally that brought an end to the one-party rule, ushering in new era of multiparty democracy.

The MP said that for the past 40 years, the Kamukunji Grounds have played a significant role in the Kenyan struggle for human rights and democracy, and hence the need for the government to give it special status and to rehabilitate it.
