NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua on Friday led her party National Executive Council in calling for the resignation of the electoral commissioners.

Speaking at a retreat at Maanzoni Lodge in Machakos County, the party expressed its disappointment with continued lack of political will to resolve issues surrounding legitimacy and institutional preparedness of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the 2017 General Election.

“We hold that there is no greater reason for public officers to bow out than the loss of public trust and confidence in such officers,” said Ms Karua.

She said it was clear that there was emerging consensus among key stakeholders, including opposition parties, the faiths community, workers as well as sections of Jubilee on the unsuitability of the IEBC.

“Given the erosion of public trust in the IEBC commissioners in their ability to deliver on their mandate, we believe the only logical and honourable thing the commissioners can do is to resign and pave way for the formation of a new team that can inspire broad confidence among the people of Kenya,” said Ms Karua.
