Red Cross halts work in volatile region

“We cannot continue putting the lives of our volunteers in danger,” said Mr Gullet.

The Kenya Red Cross has suspended services in Mandera County, citing safety concerns for its staff.
Secretary-General Abbas Gullet on Monday said recent attacks on two Red Cross ambulances in Rhamu Sub-county had made it necessary to halt aid services in the region until the safety of workers is guaranteed.
On Sunday, the humanitarian agency received a distress call around 9pm that unknown assailants had attacked its ambulance near Isack Kora Village, about 15 kilometres from Rhamu Town.
A crew member sustained bullet wounds on his legs, while another escaped unhurt after police officers came to their rescue.
“We cannot continue putting the lives of our volunteers in danger,” said Mr Gullet.
“Our people had to hide for more than three hours in the bushes before help from the police arrived.”
A second ambulance was sent to help the crew, but the assailants had planted nails on the road, which punctured three tires, frustrating rescue efforts.
According to Mr Gullet, the attackers looted the first vehicle of medical supplies and equipment, including its radio.
