Kenyan student hit and killed by a train in Texas, US

A Kenyan college student was hit and killed by a train as he walked along railroad tracks in Richmond in Texas, US authorities have said.

Police said the incident happened at 11am, about a kilometre east of a bridge over the Brazos River on State Highway 90.

“We are still carrying out investigations as it still remains unclear why the young man was on those tracks in the first place,” an officer at Richmond Police Department told Nation on Saturday.

“The teenager died at the scene and no other fatalities or injuries have been reported,” said Lt. Lowell Neinast, spokesman for the Richmond Police Department.

The Kenyan community in Texas was mourning Saturday as the family of the deceased announced that Mr Jesse Sagiroi would be buried next week.

A statement sent to the Nation read in part:  “Jesse will be buried next week next Saturday at Memorial Garden in Pearland, TX following a service at Sugarland Mortuary at 10am at 1818 Eldridge Rd, Sugarland, TX 77478.”

The deceased was a student at Wharton County Junior College.
