Kenyans say Aids biggest threat to life

Kenyans see HIV/Aids and venereal diseases as the biggest threats to the existence of mankind, a new survey reveals.

The study by the US-based Pew Research Global, targeting 44 countries, says Kenyans also view the proliferation of nuclear weapons as well as religious and ethnic hatred as the other fronts on which mankind will be wiped out.

“Kenyans wish to see world governments address these issues as a matter of urgency,” it says.

MOST WORRIED

Ugandans are the most worried about the HIV/Aids scourge at 44 per cent, followed by Tanzanians (41 per cent) and South Africans (35 per cent). Kenyans and Senegalese are tied at 29 per cent.

Tunisia and Egypt, whose governments were toppled by a popular uprisings, name religious and ethnic hatred as the worst enemies of peaceful coexistence. Nigeria is grappling with the Islamist killer group Boko Haram.

Kenyans also want the inequality between the rich and the poor to be addressed.

Only three per cent of the interviewees view environmental degradation and pollution as threats to the world’s well-being.
