The government has ordered immediate impounding of all vehicles with tinted windows as it steps up its effort in fighting terrorism in the country.

The announcement will be effected on Tuesday and any person found driving a vehicle with such window will be prosecuted.

Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has contradicted an earlier statement by Police spokesmen Masood Mwinyi who had earlier said the directive would only affect public service vehicles (PSV) by asking that all Kenyans comply immediately or face the law.

Speaking to the Nation on Tuesday evening, Kimaiyo asked all Kenyans consider it their patriotic duty to remove tint from their windows.

"I have led by example and I hereby call upon all Kenyans to consider this their patriotic duty in aiding the police stem the rising incidents of terrorism. I urge all motorists to remove the tint from their vehicle regardless of whether it came with the car or was it was done locally," he said.

In a statement, Kimaiyo also ordered PSV operators to screen all passengers before allowing them to on board.

He added that the Usalama Watch, an ongoing security operation, has so far screened 2303 people leading to the deportation of 447 people and a return to refugee camps for 730 others.
