  • Mrs Karogo holds a Master of Science degree from Jkuat, Bachelor of Education degree from UoN, and diploma in technical education.

The Kenya National Examinations Council has appointed Mrs Mercy Gathigia Karogo as the acting chief executive.

She will hold the position until the new chief executive is hired, the council chairman, Prof George Magoha, said Thursday.

Mrs Karogo replaces Dr Joseph Kivilu, who was, together with eight other senior managers, suspended on Tuesday to pave the way for investigations into irregularities in last year’s national examinations.

Mrs Karogo, who has previously acted as the CEO of the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), started her career as a secondary schoolteacher before becoming a lecturer at the then Kenya Polytechnic, said Prof Magoha in a statement, adding:  “She has held a number of other senior positions in a career spanning 30 years.”

PAY PROTEST

Mrs Karogo, who until her appointment was a senior deputy director at the KICD, has a Master of Science degree from Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology, a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Nairobi and a diploma in technical education from the Kenya Technical Teachers College.

Meanwhile, teachers who were involved in the administration of last year’s national examinations have protested delayed payments.

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) chairman Omboko Milemba said it was unfair for the Knec to continue with holding the dues long after services had been given.

The Knec is expected to release Sh1.2 billion to pay the allowances.
