Knut calls for teachers’ referendum

A union says it will call for a referendum to address teachers’ grievances.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers’ push will be the third call for a plebiscite after Cord’s Okoa Kenya and governors’ Pesa Mashinani.

Knut Chairman Mudzo Nzili told more than 1,000 teachers, students and parents of Ronald Ngala Primary School, Mombasa that teachers would push for a referendum dubbed Pesa Mashuleni to address challenges in the education sector.

He was speaking on Friday during celebrations to mark the World Teachers’ Day.

FOLLOWERS AND BYSTANDERS

He said they would address issues to do with poor remuneration, quality of teaching tools, proper teaching environment and materials, employment of more tutors, insecurity in schools and infrastructure.

“Kenya has a lot of money which senators, governors and MCAs have been asking for,” he said.

He said if Kenyans voted for the Pesa Mashuleni referendum, the money would be used to improve students’ and teachers’ welfare as well as building more schools.

“We are tired of being followers, bystanders and passive. We want teachers to wake up and demand that the government takes money to schools. Let us walk this road,” he said.

Mr Nzili asked parents to join in the push for it would stop harambees for construction of schools, toilets, among other things.
