What you need to know:

  • Knut chair Mudzo Nzili said tutors had concluded pay talks with the Teachers Service Commission

  • The union boss renewed calls to put performance contracts for headteachers and appraisals for ordinary tutors on hold.

Teachers have met requirements set out by their employer and they expect to sign a Collective Bargaining Agreement on February 27, their union said Sunday.

Kenya National Union of Teachers Chairman Mudzo Nzili said tutors had concluded pay talks with the Teachers Service Commission and hoped to beat the one-month deadline set by the President.

Speaking after overseeing Nyeri branch Knut elections, Mr Nzili said the union assigned a technical team to study the agreement terms presented by TSC and negotiate.

PERFORMANCE CONTRACTS

“We cannot say that the CBA will 60-40 per cent. It can be above or below because we are still talking. We are optimistic that we will reach an agreement within the time given,” Mr Nzili said.

The union boss renewed calls to put performance contracts for headteachers and appraisals for ordinary tutors on hold.

Mr Nzili said it was unfair to subject teachers to new conditions without explaining the terms.

He said the appraisals were being rolled out by TSC against their agreement. “The teacher has a right to know the number of students he or she will deal with daily and compensation for teaching a bloated classroom,” he said.

The Knut chairman wants TSC to promote teachers in line with the Koech recommendations of 2000.

He said TSC was dodging its responsibility by denying teachers promotions to their respective job groups.
