A teachers’ union has called on the Kenya Nation Examination Council (KNEC) to call off national secondary schools examinations set to begin in a week’s time over delay in release of free education funds.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) national Secretary General Akello Misori wants Knec to suspend Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations following failure by the government to release the free secondary education funds for third term.

He said the funds would enable the schools to prepare adequately for the exams.

“Our schools are not able to purchase the science equipment required by students during the examinations,” he said on Monday.

He said the worst hit are day secondary schools which have huge financial burdens as they owe their suppliers and do not have other sources of income as compared to boarding schools.

Mr Misori said he has asked secondary schools head to send students home on Wednesday, October 16 over the delay in releasing the funds.

Speaking in Bondo town during the Annual General Meeting of Kuppet, Siaya branch, Mr Misori said he gave the directive as lack of funds was making it difficult for school heads to manage the institutions effectively.

“School heads have raised a lot of complaints to my office. They are facing a lot of difficulties in managing their schools,” he said.
