The family of a 14-year-old schoolgirl, allegedly killed by police officers, recorded a statement at Kinango Division police headquarters on Friday.

Kwekwe Mwandaza’s family had earlier been turned away by officers at Samburu and Taru police stations.

The family members recorded the statement at 11am and said they were hopeful the police would cooperate in their quest to resolve the murder of Kwekwe.

The girl’s uncle, Mr Ndurya Zani, said police have been reluctant to recorded a statement from them, maintaining that the girl had planned to attack an officer with a machete.

“We explained exactly the way the killing happened,” he said.

Mr Zani urged the Inspector-General of Police, Mr David Kimaiyo, to conduct independent investigations into the shooting.

He was accompanied by the girl’s mother, Ms Umazi Zani, and family member Mgandi Zani, who was with Kwekwe when she was killed.

MARKED UNKNOWN

From the police station, the family visited the Kinango District Hospital mortuary.

Mr Auma said officials there told them the body was taken there by four police officers and it was marked “unknown.”

Mr Auma said the family wanted the postmortem examination report to be reviewed and the cause of death established.

“If it will not be redone, then we will call for the body to be exhumed,” Mr Auma said.

He called for the investigation of the area chief, who they accused of aiding the police in the killing of the Mavurivurini Primary School Class Four pupil.

“The family believes if it were not for the chief who led the police to the homestead, the girl would not have been shot,” he said.

Muslims for Human Rights official Francis Auma, who was with the family, added that Haki Africa, Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and Independent Medical Legal Unit would work together to ensure that justice was done for the family.
