Members who took part in the chaos that disrupted the Law Society of Kenya AGM will be punished, the Society Council has said.

A special council meeting held at the LSK headquarters in Nairobi expressed regret at what happened during the meeting.

In a statement read by LSK boss Eric Mutua on Wednesday, the council said video footage had identified those who took part in the chaos.

The society has been dogged by controversy over the construction of a Sh1.2bn International Arbitration and Convention Centre.

The council said it would hold a meeting in 21 days to thrash out the issues.

“The meeting shall involve council members, senior counsel, representatives from LSK branches and representatives of the petitioners in the cases,” Mr Mutua said.

A special general meeting will be held on September 26.

Last Tuesday, a group of lawyers opposed to the manner in which the project was being undertaken appeared to have softened their stance. They said there were no factions in LSK.

In a statement by Edwin Sifuna on behalf of the Okoa LSK group, the members said they stood for unity.

“The membership is open to dialogue with the leadership as has been proposed by CJ Willy Mutunga,” they said.

However, they took issue with the manner in which the leaders handled the meeting, saying members should not be addressed with a clenched fist.
