Police probe motive after more killings

What you need to know:

  • We initially thought it was the Al-Shabaab but it’s turning out to be the MRC. That is going by the reports we are receiving from the ground,” Ms Kaindi said.
  • The blackboard was displayed like a “billboard” at a road junction, “with intention to incite others,” she said.

Police are investigating three possible motives of attacks following the killing of 22 people in fresh raids in Lamu and the Tana Delta.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Grace Kaindi said prime suspects were members of the Mombasa Republican Council and the motive could be “political, religious or land issues.”

Detectives started working on the theories after they found a blackboard with indicative writings, which they believe was purposely left on a road by the perpetrators.

“We can’t leave any angle. We investigate everything before we start ruling out and confirming the facts.

In the Tana Delta, about 30 to 50 armed people raided Gamba Police Station at 11pm on Saturday and engaged officers in a gun battle.

An officer died in the fighting while two others survived with bullet wounds.

The attackers then broke into the cells and pulled out five people who were being held there and killed them.

“During the confrontation, three prisoners escaped while 10 others remained unhurt in the next cell. The OCS (station commander) immediately mobilised all officers within the station and called for reinforcement from the neighbouring police posts,” Ms Kaindi said.

Other sources indicated that the three were MRC suspects who had been arrested earlier over various charges.

Police said the attackers fled after more officers arrived to help their colleagues.
