Special team deployed to track down Lamu killers

Scores of security officers have been deployed to track down the gunmen behind the wave of killings in Lamu County.

The operation involves officers drawn from the General Service Unit, Rapid Deployment Unit and Rural Border Patrol Unit and Regular Police.

The officers on the ground are backed by an aerial surveillance team in military and police helicopters. The operation has been clustered into 10 sections.

A senior security officer who spoke to the Daily Nation on condition of anonymity said each of the units has been assigned special tasks in the operation spearheaded by the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of Administration Police, Mr Samuel Arachi.

AROUND THE FORESTS

“We are setting up proper mechanisms to ensure the attackers are tracked and flushed out of their hideouts. All security agencies are involved,” he said. Mr Arachi was however not available for comment.

There was increased patrol with GSU, AP and regular police officers moving in and around the forests.

Journalists were barred from following the officers.

The operation covers Boni forest in Hindi, Witu, Pandanguo and Kipini forests.

Mr Arachi was expected to attend a security meeting in Mpeketoni together with Lamu county administration and police commanders.
