A motor vehicle dealer on Thursday told a court that former television anchor Louis Otieno had introduced the late Careen Chepchumba as his wife.

Mr John Nderitu, a director at Subru Motors, narrated how Mr Otieno had introduced Ms Chepchumba to him as his wife when they had gone to purchase a car.

“He told me he wanted to purchase a car for his wife, a Volkswagen Golf that he bought for Sh1 million. When he came to pay for the car, he was in the company of the wife, Careen,” Mr Nderitu said.

He said Mr Otieno traded in his Toyota Land Cruiser for a Range Rover in 2011.

According to the witness, the value of the Land Cruiser was Sh2.4 million, while that of the Range Rover was Sh5.9 million.

“Mr Otieno was supposed to top up the difference in cash. We allowed him to pay in instalments,” he said.

The inquest heard that after the first instalment, Mr Otieno defaulted and asked to trade in a Volkswagen Golf he had bought for his ‘wife’.

“We agreed to take it but could not dispose of it. Later, the wife offered to have it back and paid Sh800,000 and promised to pay the balance of Sh200,000 later,” Mr Nderitu said.

The witness produced a receipt for the payment of Sh800,000 bearing the names of Careen Kili Armstrong.

Her father’s name is Hosea Kili, while the former TV anchor’s full name is Louis Armstrong Otieno.

Mr Nderitu said Mr Otieno was unable to pay for the Range Rover after Ms Chepchumba’s death. The vehicle was repossessed by the dealer and later sold to recover the debt.
