The National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee is today set to start considering the petition for the removal of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission bosses.

The committee is scheduled to meet Mr Barasa Nyukuri, a political scientist, who has submitted a 39-page petition citing incompetence and lack of integrity as the grounds for the removal of the IEBC chairman and eight commissioners.

Its consideration of the petition runs parallel to the planned investigation of the IEBC by a select committee, which is expected to be set up by the end of the week, after the two major coalitions — Cord and Jubilee — reached a brokered agreement.

Mr Nyukuri is also a consultant and has worked with the IEBC and its predecessors, the Interim Independent Electoral Commission and the Electoral Commission of Kenya as a trainer.

Mr Nyukuri also worked with the Committee on Experts on the Constitution as a civic educator.
