Police in Eldoret Town on Sunday arrested a man on suspicion of killing his pregnant girlfriend and attempting to throw the body into a river.

Officers said the 32-year-old may have killed the woman on Friday or Saturday.

Witnesses said they saw the man carrying a sack around 11pm.

“We met the man carrying the sack which appeared heavy. He was from his house. We asked if we could be of assistance but refused,” said Mr Amos Wafula, a plumber.

“We didn’t know why he dropped the sack near the gate and rushed to his house before locking the door,” added Mr Wafula’s friend.

According to the man’s landlady, Ms Damaris Wangare, he moved into the building two weeks ago.

“Nobody knows him well. In fact, when he came to look for a house and moved in, he was alone. We had no idea he had a girlfriend,” she said.

Ms Wangare added that she heard a commotion outside the house and thought one of her tenants was moving.

“A tenant had notified me of his intention to move so I thought he was taking his things to the gate,” she said.

“Someone then called me and when I went outside, I saw a sack with a woman’s body inside. I raised alarm then informed the police.”

When the Nation team visited the scene, a foul smell hung in the air. Clothes were strewn all over the place. A pregnancy testing kit was on the ground.

Eldoret West DCIO Ali Samatar said the woman’s identity had not been established and investigations to establish the motive of the killing had been launched.

“The reason for the killing remains unknown. We are holding him to establish why he may have done that. We also want to know who the woman is,” he told the Nation.

Few weeks ago, a man was arrested in Langas Estate on suspicion of chopping up his wife and hiring street children to dump the body into River Sosiani near Eldoret Town.
