A schoolteacher was shot dead in Mandera on Sunday, bringing to the fore the security concerns raised by teachers who have refused to resume duty in the region.
Kenya National Union Teachers Secretary-General Wilson Sossion, in a statement on Monday, called on the government to bring Mr Ibrahim Hassan's killers to justice.
"We have learnt of the killing of the above-stated teacher, who was teaching at Shampoley Primary School, yesterday, 1st March, 2015 through a gun attack. It is regrettable and we are saddened as a union," said the statement signed by Mr Sossion.
TRANSFERS
Teachers posted to northeastern Kenya have been calling on their colleagues in other parts of the country to support their push for transfers from the region.
Some of the teachers had camped at the Teachers Service Commission headquarters in Nairobi and had refused to resume work over insecurity in Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties. At least 300 teachers had staged a sit-in at the headquarters.
"Our union shall not and cannot tolerate the senseless killing of any of the members of the teaching force. You are therefore authorized to proceed and stage demonstrations after the expiry of the five days' ultimatum given by you," the union said.
