At least 20 people have died while 5 are injured in renewed clan fighting between Degodia and Gare in Wajir County over political boundary dispute.

Wajir County Commander David Kirui told Nation that 20 people have been killed in the fighting that started early on Sunday and 5 more were injured.

The epicenter of the fierce fight between the two groups is a tinny place called Kulani as called by the Gares’ and Gunani by the Degodias’.

Security sources who declined to be named told Nation that the fight started at 7.30 am and continued to midday, leaving human death and destruction of property and livestock worth millions of shillings.

Gares’ are said to be furious about moving Kulani polling station from Mandera West constituency to Tarbaj constituency -10 kilometers interior Wajir county.

But on the other hand Degodias’ maintain that Gunani is their birth place and they will not secede an inch to any group or county.

Mandera County Commissioner Michael Tialal confirmed the fighting but could not divulge further information –arguing the incidents happened 10km inside Wajir County close the to the border.

Wajir County Commissioner Naftally Mugatia and Police Commander Philip Chirchir are said to have driven to the flashpoint but they could not be reached for comment.

Two days ago two university students were killed in Mandera by suspected Gare militia. The two were waylaid while returning from their farm in Rhamu.

There have been clan rivalries between the two communities in recent months where more than 40 people have been killed and thousands displaced.
