Justice David Maraga on Thursday said he is excited over his nomination as the new Chief Justice.

Speaking at his home in Nairobi, the Court of Appeal judge said he will ensure efficient services in the Judiciary.

“I am excited, ready and I will work with colleagues to ensure an efficient service delivery. We still have a long way to go. This is a challenging position but I am ready to give it my best,” he said.

He said he will embark on reducing the backlog of cases as there are over 500,000 pending matters that need to be heard and determined promptly.

“I will also harness technology in hearing of cases, which include automated recording of proceedings,” he said.

There was song and dance at Bonyamatuta village in West Mugirango, Nyamira County following the news that Justice Maraga has been recommended for the post of CJ.

Justice Maraga’s relatives and friends told Nation.co.ke that his nomination is the ‘work of God.’

“We are indeed happy with what has happened. This is surely the work of God,” said Ms Fashit Kemuma, a close family member.

Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama said the judge ‘deserves the job.’

“I have all along known him as a man of virtue,” said Governor Nyagarama.

Nominated Senator Janet Ong ‘era also welcomed JSC’s decision.

“It is a great honour for Kenya. I know Judge Maraga as a wise arbiter. He will for sure take the judiciary to the next level,’ she said.

Kisii Governor James Ongwae said the CJ nominee has distinguished himself as a diligent, God fearing, dedicated and resolute worker of the judiciary.

“…we are proud of his nomination and wish him well as he awaits formal appointment by the President and approval by the National Assembly. We hope there won’t be hitches in this process,’ said Mr Ongwae.
