Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said the government is in the final process of developing a new curriculum for teacher-training colleges.

Dr Matiang’i said the curriculum being drafted by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development would see the P1 curriculum reviewed.

In a speech read on his behalf by Director of Basic Education Irrenous Kinara during the 79th graduation ceremony at Asumbi Teachers Training College in Homa Bay County, Dr Matiang’i said colleges must devise other ways of teaching.

“As we train teachers, we must embrace new modes of curriculum delivery to be in tandem with international standards,” the minister said.

The Cabinet secretary also encouraged the institutions to embrace ICT as a teaching and learning tool.

“Although the teacher-training curriculum has integrated ICT, a lot needs to be done for us to comfortably say that we have reached the goal for student-teacher ICT literacy,” he said.

Dr Matiang’i encouraged colleges to start various income generating projects.

He, however, added that as the institutions improved their revenue base, they needed to know that prudent management of resources was important.

Some 529 P1 and 82 early childhood development education graduates comprising 28 diploma, 32 certificate and 22 proficiency were feted at the ceremony.
The Cabinet secretary thanked development partners who are supporting education.

He cited the United States Agency for International Development (USAid-Kenya) for helping teacher-training colleges embrace ICT.

Other agencies mentioned were Tusome Innovations and Unicef Kenya country office for introducing child-friendly school programmes in the colleges.

“As a government, we shall continue with these programmes in colleges so that the graduates are equipped with the requisite contemporary teaching skills,” said Dr Matiang’i.
