A parents’ lobby group has accused the government of encouraging head teachers to arbitrarily increase school fees.

The Kenya National Parents Association faulted Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi for allowing schools to charge the fees they did last year yet the ministry did not release any guidelines for 2013.

“There is no official fee structure for 2013. This is giving schools a blank cheque. Each school will charge the amount it feels is appropriate and it is parents who stand to suffer,” Mr Musau Ndunda, the association’s secretary general said Monday.

KILEMI MWIRIA REPORT

He addressed the media at Nacico plaza, Nairobi while accompanied by Mr Genard Nyaga (national chairman), Malla James (national coordinator) and Rachel Oduor (deputy organising secretary).

Mr Ndunda said the government should implement the recommendations contained in the report released to the government by the task force that was chaired by former Higher Education Assistant Minister, Dr Kilemi Mwiria.

The task force recommended that day schools should charge a maximum of Sh11, 105, boarding Sh38, 969 and special schools Sh22,830.

But Kenya Secondary School Heads Association chairman John Awiti said the government requires more time to consult on how the task force report can be adopted without affecting service delivery in public schools.
