Ministry to deploy graduates to work as support staff

The ministry of Education is set to deploy university graduates to various schools in 20 counties under the national leadership development programme.

The 88 graduates, who have undergone a four-day training at Thogoto Teachers Training College, will join 482 others who are already providing community service under the G-United programme whose objective, among others, is to promote national cohesion and integration.

The counties include Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Migori, Kwale, Kiambu, Kisumu, Meru, Samburu, and Kilifi.

Speaking at the close of the training on Friday, the Dean of Students at Thogoto TTC, Mr Solomon Muriiki, said the graduates have gained experience that will enable them adapt well in different cultural and socioeconomic settings.

"They have been given the skills in teaching by experts from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development. They will provide remedial lessons, mainly in literacy, to class one and two [pupils] with learning difficulties," Mr Muriiki said.

INTERACTION

The graduates - who will be referred to as Volunteer Graduates Assistants - have been deployed to primary schools to provide support and serve as educational ambassadors.

They will live with host families until the end of the third term, an experience that will broaden their vision.

They expressed excitement about the undertaking, saying it will be a learning experience.

While launching the programme in 2014, President Uhuru Kenyatta said such initiatives would make people understand that Kenyans have shared goals.
