Police in Mombasa are holding a man arrested while trafficking heroin worth Sh10 million through Moi International Airport.

Mohamed Jabir was seized with the hard drug hidden in the sole of his shoes.

Airport police chief John Otieno said the suspect was arrested Thursday night as he prepared to board a Rwanda Airways plane to Dubai.

1 KILOGRAMME

"The suspect is in our custody [and] we have already called an expert from the Government Chemist so that we can ascertain the quantity of the substance" said Mr Otieno.

According to police sources, the heroin weighs one kilogramme.

"The drug belongs to a Tanzanian drug baron who comes to Mombasa and leaves,” said an officer who is privy to the investigation.

“We are following more crucial leads. The suspect is still being interrogated.”

AKASHAS CASE

Airport manager Yatich Kangugo said authorities are committed to ensuring the airport is not used as a drug transit point.

The arrest comes days after President Uhuru Kenyatta declared war on drug barons in coast region.

Two suspected drug barons in Mombasa, Baktash Akasha and Ibrahim Akasha, were arrested and extradited to the US to face drug trafficking charges.

Others facing charges are Ghulam Hussein and Indian national Vijaygiri Goswami.

Their case has started in a New York court.
