The majority of the 22 companies mentioned in the Lamu land grab case stand little chance of retaining their titles, according to National Land Commission (NLC) chairman Muhamad Swazuri.

Dr Swazuri Sunday said only Maalim Ranch, Mokowe Kibokoni Cooperative Society and Pandanguo Boni Community Ranch might be spared.

The NLC has completed investigations into the firms, which are accused of grabbing 500,000 acres in the county.

EXTENT OF THE ROT

On July 30, President Uhuru Kenyatta disclosed the extent of the rot in Lamu.

Dr Swazuri said his team visited the 22 ranches despite poor infrastructure and insecurity. They also sought the public’s views on the matter during the visits.

“Titles for most of them need to be revoked due to inadequate proof of occupancy or ranching. We have also seen massive irregularities on most of the ranches. We shall call the owners next week to explain to the commission before we compile our final report,” said Dr Swazuri.

The NLC boss said most of the ranches visited were unoccupied.
