The Baringo County government is on the spot after a woman and her baby died moments after delivery at a referral hospital in Kabarnet due to lack of blood.

The 20-year-old Doris Keitany from Ng’etmoi in Baringo Central Sub-County bled excessively at the Kabarnet District Hospital on Friday.

Since there was no blood at the institution, nurses referred her to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for blood transfusion.

“We received the good news that she had delivered a baby boy but our celebrations were short-lived because some minutes later the baby died. She was, however, referred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital but she died on the way,” said Ivy Rotich, one of Ms Keitany’s relatives.

“We regret that the incident happened. There is a shortage of blood at the county referral hospital. We have had a blood shortage at the facility for the last two years. We have complained to the Ministry of Health over the problem,” said Mr Atuko.
