Suspect in Kabete MP George Muchai murder accuse police of torture

A man arrested over death of former Kabete Mp George Muchai has claimed police tortured him to "extract a confession."

Lawyer Kamati Shamara told the court on Friday that Simon Wambugu had "serious injuries on his private parts" and needed urgent medical attention.

He asked the court to order that he be treated by a private doctor at his own cost.

Resident Magistrate Miriam Mugure directed that Mr Wambugu be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital and a report on his condition be presented to court.

She also directed the police to allow the lawyer to access Mr Wambugu.

Meanwhile, police are yet to decide on the charges to prefer against seven suspects arrested over the killing of the legislator.

MURDER CHARGE

The prosecution requested for more time to complete their investigations.

Mr Daniel Karori for the prosecution applied for the court to allow the police to continue holding Mr Wambugu as the suspects may be charged with murder on March 10.

"There are compelling reasons for the suspects to be held further in police custody pending conclusion of investigation...he is likely to face capital charges and may flee is released on bond," Mr Karori said.

Mr Wambugu, will continue being held in custody following a request by the prosecution that he be detained to help with the ongoing investigations at the Central police station.

"The application by the prosecution for extended custodial period is well founded as investigations are incomplete, the suspect faces capital charges alongside others and may be flee the court’s jurisdiction," the magistrate said.

Mr Muchai was gunned down alongside his two aides and driver on February 7 along Kenyatta Avenue within Nairobi's Central Business District.
