A human rights activist has demanded police protection, saying his life is in danger.

Mr Al-Amin Kimathi of the Human Rights Forum reported the threat at Kileleshwa Police Station on Tuesday in the company of lawyers Gitobu Imanyara and Harun Ndubi.

He had earlier reported the matter to Internal Security Cabinet secretary Joseph ole Lenku and Principal Secretary Mutea Iringo, who told him to go to the police.

Next after Makaburi

Mr Kimathi said he had alerted the Kenya National Human Rights Commission.

“I got worried after a colleague at Human Rights Watch told me he had been warned by an officer in the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit that I would be next after Makaburi,” the rights outfit boss said.

Sheikh Abubakar Shariff, aka Makaburi, was shot dead in Mombasa on April 1. Mr Imanyara said the threat was “a serious matter” and asked the government to provide Mr Kimathi with security.

In 2011, Mr Kimathi was among five detainees a Ugandan court released after the 2010 bombing of a night club in which 76 people died.
