NGOs elect new officials to office

What you need to know:

  • Mr Kipkazi beat his closest challenger, Mr Lenana Momoi, with 111 votes against Mr Momoi’s eight votes
  • Ms Grace Weru clinched the Vice-Chairperson’s seat with 76 votes of the 130 votes cast

Non-governmental organisations have conducted elections despite a court order barring the polls.

Ironically, Mr Wilson Kipkazi who had obtained the injunction against NGOs Council’s elections and advertised it participated and was elected chairman.

Mr Kipkazi beat his closest challenger, Mr Lenana Momoi, with 111 votes against Mr Momoi’s eight votes.

Mr Momoi had protested against relocation of the election to Nakuru claiming that would grant Mr Kipkazi undue advantage as Nakuru was his home ground.

VOTES CAST

Ms Grace Weru clinched the Vice-Chairperson’s seat with 76 votes of the 130 votes cast.

Mr Benjamin Onkoba Nyaachi was elected Treasurer unchallenged, while Mr Abdirahman Mohamed Ali became a member of the regulatory committee board unopposed.

The injunction was issued by a magistrate, who scheduled hearing of all parties on April 30.

The order had barred Ms Violet Jumba Okinda, Mr Mohamed Noor and Mr Abner Mogire from conducting the elections the suit is determined.

Others elected to the executive board are Mr Khatra Sigat (North Eastern), Ms Catherine Muriithi (Nairobi), Mr George Obondo (North Nyanza), Mr JohnMwangi (Central), Mr Jonathan Kimunge (Centyral Rift), Mr Peter Kubebea (Western) and Mr Stephen Kemboi (North Rift).
