The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has raised concern over the increase in cases of drivers tampering with speed governors.

In a press release, NTSA Director General Francis Meja said the authority will intensify checks speed limiters on public service and commercial vehicles to ensure the gadgets are not tampered with.

“It has emerged that some PSVs and Commercial Vehicles operators have contravened their operator license by tampering or disconnecting their speed governors, with a view to drive their motor vehicles beyond the set speed limits.

“The Authority wish to inform all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and commercial vehicles operators who fail, neglect or refuse to comply with the set conditions of speed governors, that NTSA will permanently withdraw the Road Service License (RSL) of the culpable operator,” he said.

Mr Meja said 429 people have been killed in road crashes involving public service vehicles since the beginning of the year.

His concern follows the arrest of a matatu driver belonging to the Meru Nissan Sacco plying the Nairobi-Meru by NTSA highway enforcement team.

The driver was charged in a court and fined Sh70, 000 for speeding and endangering the lives of passengers.
