Leading television broadcaster NTV has become the first brand in East Africa to attract one million followers on social media networking site Twitter.

The station is among TV channels in the Nation Media Group stable and with a foothold in Kenya and the region.

Making the announcement on Tuesday, an excited Mr Larry Madowo, NTV’s technology editor, said the move would promote “healthy competition” with other broadcasters.

“It has happened! NTV has become the first brand in East Africa to hit one million followers on Twitter!” he said in an email to staff at the station.

"The @ntvkenya is the most followed Twitter account in Kenya after President Kenyatta's and this cements our reputation as the region's biggest digital brand as several independent studies have already shown. 'When news breaks, more people turn to NTV online - and on air - than any other media house," he said.

Mr Madowo also hosts "The Trend", a popular Friday evening entertainment talk show that offers an analytical view of what is trending on social media pop culture and other issues affecting Kenyans.

NTV, which defines itself as “first for breaking news and home to the best entertainment on television”, offers viewers current affairs news, local and international drama series, talk shows and all-round family entertainment.
