NYS team starts Kibera clean-up

  • Yesterday, 675 servicemen and women were deployed in Kibera slums where they helped clear blocked drainage as well as collect garbage.

National Youth Service graduates have started working in informal settlements to help improve sanitation.

The servicemen and women will be involved in general cleaning, civil works, drainage construction and improving sewer facilities, according to the Ministry of Devolution and Planning.

Yesterday, 675 servicemen and women were deployed in Kibera slums where they helped clear blocked drainage as well as collect garbage.

Speaking during the activity, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru said the NYS graduates would work with the local youth in developing and transforming them into competitive and employable youth as well as improving the living conditions of the residents.

“The new NYS is passionate about improving the living environment in our towns. NYS will deploy graduates into informal settlements across the country to carry out various activities such as garbage clean up through the “Taka ni Pato” model,” she said in Kibera.

Several areas had been earmarked for sanitation works, she said.
