Drugs worth Sh163 million will be distributed to more than 80 health facilities in Nairobi County.

The bulk of the drugs will be to distributed to Pumwani Maternity, Mbagathi District, and Mama Lucy Kibaki District hospitals.

Nairobi Health chief officer Dr Robert Ayitsi said the drugs were procured by the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa), following a request by the health facilities.

“Pumwani has already received drugs worth Sh20 million, and Mbagathi about Sh30 million,” Dr Ayitsi said on Saturday during a medical camp in Kasarani where more than 500 residents were screened for various illnesses.

The camp was organised by the Kenya Women and Children’s Wellness Centre.

BE ACCOUNTABLE

“The drugs must be used as intended and not sold. In fact, health centres will be required to report after every two weeks for accountability purposes.”

Counties purchase about 65 per cent of their medical supplies through Kemsa. In the last financial year, Kemsa supplied Sh2.2 billion worth of drugs to counties.

Dr Ayitsi defended Pumwani hospital over allegations of baby theft. He said there was no baby business in the hospital and urged anyone whose child may have been stolen at the facility to come forward.
