National Anthem composer passes away

The composer of Kenya's National Anthem, Mzee Meza Moroa Galana, 96, has died at the Hola District Hospital.

According to Mrs Ziporah Galana, the hero’s second and only surviving wife, Mr Galana had been bed-ridden for a long time, but on Monday his condition changed and he sought medical attention.

Mzee Galana passed away at 4pm on Thursday at the hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since November 9.

Until his death, the composer lived in Makere Village, Gwano Location, Tana River County.

His family said on the day he was admitted to hospital, he had woken up bleeding and was later diagnosed with pneumonia at the hospital.

Tana River County Health Director Oscar Endekwa confirmed his death.

Mzee Galana is known for composing the National Anthem, whose tune is that of a traditional lullaby sung by the Pokomo community.

He is survived by his wife, six children and about 29 grandchildren.

His body was moved to Malindi District Hospital mortuary before burial on November 21, according to family members.
