We shall repossess all grabbed public land, agency vows

The National Land Commission is asking those with title deeds of grabbed land to surrender them.

“Those clinging on the documents are wasting time because the titles will be revoked anyway after the ongoing review,” commission Vice chair Mrs Abigael Mbakaya-Mukolwe said on Friday.

“Some of the land in question is public property that is not available for allocation,” she said.

“Chapter 5 of the Constitution defines public land and it is shocking that private individuals are currently holding onto such land,” said Mrs Mukolwe.

She said the commission would carry out further investigations after reports that a part of the land belonging to the Kakamega State Lodge had been grabbed.

INITIAL INVESTIGATIONS

“Initial investigations indicated that the land had only been occupied by tenants and not grabbed, she said.

The Kakamega County executive for Lands, Housing, Urban Areas and Physical Planning, Major (Rtd) Suleiman Sumba, said the County Government will spend Sh70 million on profiling and mapping of all public land.

The exercise which will take one year is expected to improve collection of land rates from Sh10 million to Sh750 million annually.
