The National Land Commission (NLC) has given all public schools until March 31 to apply for title deeds.

Chairman Muhammad Swazuri noted that only about 10 schools have so far submitted their applications.

“We asked schools to hand in reports on the status of their land as well as applications for ownership about three weeks ago,” said Dr Swazuri who spoke in Mombasa on Thursday after a four-day hearing on the status of public land in the county.

“We have a time frame of March 31 yet we have only received 10 applications. The schools have given us either status of their land or applied for titles,” he said at the Kenya School of Government.

Most of the schools that have made submissions are from Nairobi. They include Lang’ata High, Nairobi School, Pangani Girls High School, Aria Primary and El-doro Primary from Taita Taveta County.

“I am asking the schools to do what is required to hasten the process,” Dr Swazuri said.

This comes more than week after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered NLC to issue land ownership certificates to all public schools after the Lang’ata Primary school land grabbing saga.

At least five pupils and a police officer were injured in the ensuing demonstration.

Dr Swazuri said even Lang’ata Road Primary, which has been in the spotlight over a playground reportedly grabbed by a private investor, is yet to submit its application.

NLC vice chairperson Abigail Mbagaya said the forum had established that most of the State property grabbed belongs to schools, road reserves and water development projects.
