DPP orders probe into Jaguar's car crash

The Director of Public Prosecutions has told the head of criminal investigations to probe claims of cover-up of crash involving artiste Charles Njagua, alias Jaguar, that caused two deaths.
Mr Keriako Tobiko, in a letter to the Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro, marked ‘very urgent’, issued directives to probe the case after details emerged that the musician was trying to take blame on behalf of the supposed female driver.
"It is alleged that there is a cover-up as regards to the identity of the driver who caused the fatal accident," read the statement signed by Deputy DPP Nicholas Mutuku.
"I am directed to direct you to ensure thorough investigations are conducted and the resultant inquiry file forwarded to his office for perusal and appropriate directions."
The matter pertains a Wednesday crash that killed two men at Rukanga shopping centre on the Sagana/Makutano highway in Kirinyaga County.
The musician claims to be the one behind the wheel but a witness said a woman was the one driving.
The recalled seeing Jaguar and the woman exchange seats before alighting from the black Range Rover (KCB 808 J), which had three occupants, after hitting a motorcycle from behind.
"From the windscreen I saw a lady on the wheel exchanging the seat with a man. After they did that the man came out from the right side while the lady came out from the left," a road construction worker, who wanted his name withheld, said.
The accident was reported at Sagana Police station where Jaguar was recorded as the driver.
He could face prosecution for causing death by reckless driving.
However, Mwea West OCPD Samuel Seurey said no witness has agreed to make an official statement.
"None of the witnesses have recorded statements to back the claims. So, as far as we understand, Jaguar was driving. If anyone saw them switching seats we urge them to come forward and if there is a cover-up then we will hold the musician for giving false information," Mr Seurey said.
He is yet to be arraigned in court as police said they are still gathering evidence.
