New details emerge about attack at DP Ruto's home

More details have emerged after the daring attack at Deputy President William Ruto’s rural home in Sugoi.

Police said an assailant was shot and killed on Sunday morning ending a 20-hour siege.

While addressing the press after the end of the operation, Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Wanyama Musiambo said a police officer was shot dead by the assailant during the raid.

The slain officer’s eyes were gouged out and his tongue sliced, a police source said.

Mr Musiambo said another police officer was injured and is recuperating in hospital.

Officials said it was a lone-wolf attack.

“The gunman was using different guns to confuse security forces that they were many,” Mr Musiambo said, adding that security had been restored at the deputy president’s residence.

A source told the Daily Nation that the machete-wielding man attacked a GSU officer manning the gate before he gained entry into the house and into an armoury where he accessed the weapons.

Mr Musiambo assured locals, who had been camping outside the home with bows, arrows, machetes and other traditional weapons, that more security personnel would be deployed to the home, but asked them to embrace Nyumba Kumi initiative and report suspicious characters in their neighbourhoods.

The DP continued with his campaigns in several parts of the Rift Valley on Saturday.

On Sunday morning he attended the consecration ceremony of Venerable Timothy Gichere as the bishop of Anglican Churches of Kenya, ACK Mt Kenya Central Diocese at Ihura stadium in Murang'a County.
