Several officials Thursday welcomed Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich’s Sh1.8 billion vote for the construction of additional stadiums in Eldoret, Mombasa and Nairobi.

Mr Rotich Thursday said in his 2015/16 Budget Speech to Parliament that the allocation was meant to nurture sports talent and “solidify the county’s sports pedigree”.

“Sports has been the biggest marketer for this country and the talent that gives us the fame should be appreciated,” the CS said.

Sports Kenya Board chairman Fred Muteti said the three new stadiums were part of a blueprint to set up sports cities.

“In Eldoret, we will build a stadium with a track for athletics and facilities for rugby and football and also a gymnasium for indoor sports,” Mr Muteti said.

The Mombasa stadium to be built at Shanzu, would focus on athletics, football and water sports, while in Nairobi, the facility will be put up at Ngong, primarily for rugby and tennis.

Uasin Gishu County Trade and Tourism Executive Philip Melly said the investment would boost sports tourism.
