A police sergeant who had deserted duty a year ago was shot dead along Muratina Street in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area in mysterious circumstances Tuesday night.

The deceased was from Afnan Nursing Home hospital at around 9.30 pm where they had gone to visit his sick child in company of his brother, also a police officer based at the Parliament, when their car was blocked by another white Toyota Probox with two occupants.

They shot him on the head and stomach, killing him on the spot. The gunmen then drove away without stealing anything from them.

Kenya Police spokesperson Zipporah Mboroki has said that the officer was based at the Marich police station but deserted duty a year ago when he was transferred to Turkwel in Turkana.

Ms Mboroki said that a warrant of arrest had been issued against the officer but he had not been traced.

A fortnight ago, two police officers, including the Officer Commanding (OCS) Muthangari Police station, were shot and seriously injured by gangsters in Lavington.

Two suspected gunmen, one of them a former police officer, were shot dead in the five-hour gun battle where two pistols were also recovered.

Police also said that the other suspect, Constable Fredrick Afande, who was armed with an AK47 rifle and escaped in a white Toyota Probox, was a former GSU officer who was recruited into the police in 2007 but deserted duty in 2010.

He went back to work in April but was dismissed in the same month.

Sergeant Adow Hussein Emoi had served for 21 years and had also worked with the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) at the CID headquarters before his transfer to Marich.

His close friends say he was unhappy with the transfer and decided to desert duty.

“We treat it as murder and a team has already been formed to investigate the fatal shooting,” said Ms Mboroki.
