High Court halts Okemo, Gichuru bid to stop extradition case

  • High Court judge Isaac Lenaola dismissed their case filed in 2011 and upheld a magistrate court's verdict that the matter was a purely a criminal one.

Former Finance minister Chris Okemo and former Kenya Power and Lighting Company managing director Samuel Gichuru have failed to stop extradition proceedings against them over corruption related charges.

The two had moved to the High Court claiming that the Director of Public Prosecutions had no powers to institute extradition proceedings against them.

They are to face charges in Jersey Island relating to money laundering outside the country.

High Court judge Isaac Lenaola dismissed their case filed in 2011 and upheld a magistrate court's verdict that the matter was a purely a criminal one.

However, their trial at the magistrate's court will determine their fate since the Attorney-General in the Island of Jersey had written to the AG in Kenya to institute the extradition proceedings.
