A spiritual leader is seeking to convince one million Kenyans to write letters to God by mid-January next year.

BK Vedanti says the idea was born out of her realisation that many Kenyans, especially the youth, were stressed and lacked a way to vent.

“Studies have shown that writing is therapeutic, and my experience has been that when we write to a higher power, a natural sense of peace emerges,” said Vedanti, who is the regional director of Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University.

Young Kenyans

The initiative was unveiled on December 1 and is being driven by six young Kenyans drawn from different professions, faiths and communities.

They have already received a letter to God written by US President Barack Obama’s step-grandmother Sarah Obama.

Under the initiative, Kenyans will be required to cut out writing pads printed elsewhere in these pages and put down their thoughts. Writers will have an option to select whether they want their letters to be made public or kept private.

The letters will be dropped at selected collection points around the country. They can also be mailed to the organisers.

In addition, those with Internet connection can email their letters, tweet them to @MyTweet2God or post them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/write2God).

“God is not a man so he does not need to read physically to know what you are telling him. Even while you are writing, God already knows what you want to tell him,” said Vedanti, adding that the letters can be in any language.

Vedanti said they would open a memorial in January where all the letters will be deposited.
