  • Knut had previously opposed the appraisals that kicked off early this year with a target of more than 298,000 teachers across the country.

The annual performance and evaluation of teachers will go on following a deal between their employer and their union leaders.

This is after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Kenya National Union of Teachers Union (Knut) resolved that the process be undertaken according to the code of regulation.

“Parties further agree that the employer shall develop performance development programmes with a view to enhancing productivity in the teaching sector,” states the Collective Bargaining Agreement that was signed by the TSC and Knut on the sidelines of the Kenya Secondary Schoolheads Conference in Mombasa.

TSC also agreed to develop and facilitate career development programmes.

“In recognition of the fundamental shift in policy in public employment and with a view to promote, enhance and maintain high performance standards in the teaching service, parties hereby agree to ensure continuous professional development and annual performance evaluation system,” adds the agreement.

Knut had previously opposed the appraisals that kicked off early this year with a target of more than 298,000 teachers across the country.

They also agreed that career progression in the teaching service will be implemented while discipline of teachers will be undertaken in accordance with the code of regulation for teachers.

A teacher will also exit the service through resignation, retirement, redundancy, termination, dismissal, transfer of service, release to other organisations and death.
