Youth crime goes up

The number of young people involved in violent crime has increased, police say.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Grace Kaindi on Tuesday said though police did not have the exact figure of the criminals, the highest number was in Nairobi.

The conclusion was based on the number of young people killed in botched robberies, those arrested and the description of the attackers given by victims.

Out of the more than 70 suspects killed by police this year, over half were under 20.

The police boss partly attributed this phenomenon to unemployment.

“Families, religious organisations and schools can help by giving moral and spiritual support to young men. Youth involvement in religious programmes, for example, would keep them busy,” she said in a statement read on her behalf by Nairobi County Police chief Benson Kibui.

In order to execute attacks, they sometimes develop relationships with security guards and maids, whom they pay off or threaten.
