The authority has reacted by seeking the assistance of the Witness Protection Agency (WPA) so that those who testify are safe.

On Friday last week, the authority signed an agreement with the WPA to facilitate the collaboration.

PROVIDE PROTECTION

The mandate of the agency is “to provide special protection on behalf of the State to persons in possession of important information and who are facing potential risk or intimidation due to their cooperation with prosecution and other law enforcement agencies,” says a statement released by the authority’s senior corporate communications officer, Mr Dennis Oketch.

The authority said it was mandated to investigate deaths and serious injuries caused by police action.

It also has powers to monitor, review and audit investigations by the Internal Affairs Unit of the police.
