Four women linked to a series of carjackings in western Kenya have been arrested.

Western region police chief Moses Ombati said the women were arrested in Vihiga, Kakamega and Busia after the crimes were reported in the towns in the past one week.

Police had been on alert after the number of women involved in crime, including armed robberies and carjackings, went up.

Mr Ombati said unlike in the past, the region had seen an upsurge in the number of women engaging in crime.

Two of the suspects were seized at the Malaba border while attempting to flee to Uganda after a robbery in Busia.

“Our officers pounced on the suspects as they were about to cross into Uganda and recovered a stolen motor vehicle,” said the police chief.

He said four stolen vehicles had been recovered and investigations had been launched after victims reported that they had been robbed by armed women.

Mr Ombati said electronic equipment, including three TV sets suspected to have been stolen, were recovered at a house in Lurambi estate and a suspect arrested.

Police also intensified patrols in residential areas to crack down on gambling among the youth suspected of engaging in crime as the public was asked to report suspected criminals.
